GLP-1 Side Effects: What to Expect and How to Manage Them

Almost everyone starting a GLP-1 medication has the same first question: how bad will the side effects be? The honest answer: most people experience at least one common effect, most effects are mild to moderate, and most settle within a few weeks — helped enormously by gradual dose titration.

The common list (and what actually helps)

  • Nausea — the most reported effect, strongest in the first weeks and after dose increases. Smaller, slower meals; less fried or greasy food; more protein and fluids. Many people find eating slowly until “comfortable” — not full — makes the biggest difference.
  • Constipation — slower gut transit is part of the mechanism. Water, fiber, and daily movement help; ask your provider about a magnesium or fiber supplement if it persists.
  • Fatigue — usually a food intake story: you're eating much less, sometimes with too little protein. Protein-first meals and hydration fix a lot of “GLP-1 tiredness.”
  • Heartburn / reflux — smaller portions and not lying down right after eating go a long way.
  • Injection-site redness — usually mild and short-lived; rotate sites as directed.

Why titration exists — never rush it

Programs start you at a low dose and raise it every few weeks. This is not bureaucracy; it's the single most effective side-effect management tool available. Dose increases are where most side effects appear — and your provider will hold or slow a titration if you're struggling. Plateauing at a comfortable dose is a valid destination, not a failure.

When to contact your provider

Contact your care team promptly — and seek urgent care when appropriate — for symptoms like:

  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially radiating to your back
  • Persistent vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, or signs of dehydration
  • Vision changes or severe dizziness
  • Any symptom that just feels wrong to you — clinicians would rather hear about it early

The right mental model: medication is a tool, not a test of toughness. If side effects are making life hard, that's clinical information — tell your provider. Adjusting dosing beats suffering silently.
